Bringing Food Into The United States

You’re traveling to see your family in the United States and you’ve got everything sorted out – visa, visitor insurance, spending money and plane ticket. You’ve also got a great idea for a homemade food gift. Be careful – while most people know all about visitor travel insurance, they don’t know about the restrictions on bringing food into the US.

If you carry meat, fruit, vegetables, or plants into the US in your baggage, these products will be confiscated. Other no-go items include soil and products made out of animal or plant materials.

You cannot bring food and agricultural items into the country because of the risk to US animals, plants and soil. Food and plants may carry pests and diseases, which can affect US food crops and the agriculture industry.

To be safe, leave your homemade cakes and your homegrown plants at your house. Cook your favorite meal for your family with US ingredients once you’re at your family’s house and take a non-edible gift instead.
