Travel Advice for Visitors to the USA

Are you thinking about traveling to the United States for a vacation or to visit family and friends? The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office gives the following advice and information for overseas travelers to America. This information is regularly updated by the UK’s government, and other governments also give out information relating to your visit and your safety. Look online to find out the latest travel news and information for visiting the US.

At the moment, the United States is in hurricane season which runs from June through November. Hurricanes can affect any part of the southern United States (and further into the Caribbean, if you are going to be extending your vacation into other countries.) Take heed of any warnings and keep up to date with local media reports on the latest hurricane situation.

Currently there are a number of large fires that are affecting Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico. If you are traveling to these states be prepared for travel disruption and, again, check with local news reports for safety warnings and areas that are closed. Be alert in large cities for crime – street crime and auto crime. Make sure you take precautions to safeguard your belongings while you travel.

Make sure you have the correct visa for travel to the United States. Travelers from the UK and other countries may qualify under the Visa Waiver program so they will not need a visa prior to travel for vacation or to visit friends. But, these travelers must apply to be considered under the waiver scheme. If you are in doubt, consult the US embassy where you live and ask for advice. You will also need visitor insurance for your protection while you are in the United States. Healthcare is expensive and without visitor medical insurance you may end up with large medical bills.
