Know the Rules for Bringing Gifts into the US

When it comes to traveling to the US during the holidays to visit your children you need to consider health insurance for parents similar to buying gifts. Buying the perfect gift is important, and so too is knowing whether you can actually bring it into the country. Get organized before you travel with knowledge regarding customs and security, and with good quality visitors insurance to ensure a smooth trip.

Don’t wrap your gifts as you may need to un-wrap them should they be the subject of inspection by customs officers – bring gift wrap paper with you and do it at your destination.

In terms of food, you can’t bring meat and you cannot bring rice into the US. Neither can you bring wreaths or Christmas decorations made from straw or hay, as they may harbor insects.

The regulations are complicated and they can vary depending on where you are visiting. Check with the US Transportation Security Administration and the U.S. Customs Service before you fly. Check what you can carry onto a plane in terms of liquids – Christmas decorations like snow globes could be inadmissible.
