When you visit the US to see family and friends you are likely to hire a car to get around. And when you hire a car, you will encounter a parking garage at some point in your trip. A little common sense can help you stay safe in parking garages and make sure you won’t need to call on your visitor travel insurance. Keep your hands free when you are entering the parking garage and getting into your car. Make sure you don’t have valuables in a purse or wallet that you carry in your hand, as this can be very easy to snatch. Get into your car as quickly as possible and lock the doors once you are inside.
Pay attention and keep an eye on your surroundings as you get into or out of your car. If you see something suspicious immediately go to the entrance, or the security booth. Look like you know what you are doing, even if you are new to the country.
Park in a well-lit area, preferably near other cars and close to an exit. Make sure you are covered by security cameras. When you exit or enter your car, don’t hang about and don’t stop to pack your bags outside the car.
